The next chapter – Contentful appoints a new CEO

Contentful has appointed Steve Sloan (centre) as CEO. Sloan succeeds co-founder Sascha Konietzke.

Since Balderton first backed Contentful in its Seed round in 2013, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with Sascha and his co-Founder Paolo. It has been a privilege to watch them grow the company over the past six years, expanding to the bay area and growing from two to over 300 people while working tirelessly to create a strong company culture that celebrates the diversity of the team. In his time as CEO, Sascha has also steered the company to where it stands today, recognized as the clear market leader in headless CMS, by analysts and enterprise customers alike. Contentful is now at the forefront of transforming how brands deliver digital experiences. Over 2,000 customers, including huge brands like Bang & Olufsen, Danone, Spotify, Heineken and Telus, have come to rely on the firm’s technology. They have also built a community of over 400,000 users. The decision of when to step down as CEO is never easy but when Sascha came to the board with his plan we fully supported his decision. We’re delighted he will remain a member of the board and in the role of Chief Strategy Officer, where he can focus on what he is most passionate about – helping to evolve the company’s vision, strategy and product. Leading the process for finding a new CEO has allowed Sascha to find Steve – someone with exceptionally deep product experience, a background of scaling enterprise SaaS companies from $50 million to $250 million and, most importantly, an individual that shares the values that have made Contentful such a unique company to work for.
