Splashpower deals could kickstart commercialization
Perennial start-up Splashpower has kicked off 2008 with a brace of deals that could help its wireless charging gadget finally make the step from the lab bench and onto the shelves of electronics retailers.
In the space of a matter of days, Splashpower has signed a deal with UK brand manufacturer, Alba to distribute wireless power products to the consumer market and an agreement with Singapore based Mobile & Wireless that will enable its smartphones to be powered wirelessly.
Under the terms of the most recent agreement - announced today - Alba will design and manufacture products based on Splashpower’s inductive charging technology. Initial products are planned for Q3 2008 and will feature a charging unit and add-on receivers purchased through retail stores and online.
The universal charger will support a range of mobile phones and MP3 players. In a second phase of market development scheduled for Q4 2008, Alba and Splashpower will support the integration of wireless power receivers into a range of handheld consumer devices with technology and manufacturing expertise.
Bill Campbell, Splashpower’s CEO said: 'The combination of Splashpower’s technology and intellectual property with Alba’s proven manufacturing and distribution experience is a unique combination that will deliver wireless products in volume to consumers for the first time.'
'We believe the wireless power market has exceptional growth potential and Splashpower leads this area with its unique technology,' said Daniel Harris, CEO of Alba.
'By utilizing the strengths of both companies, we believe we will provide products with a ‘wow’ factor as well as providing consumers with the ultimate in charging convenience.'
Meanwhile, under the terms of the agreement, MWg - the result of an MBO of O2's Asia Pacific handset business - devices will be equipped by 'mid year' with Splashpower’s technology to enable inductive charging.
'MWg is a proven innovator who will effectively showcase our technology,' said Campbell.
