Cambridge chip firm changes name to DisplayLink

LONDON — U.K. fabless chip company Newnham Research Ltd., which is developing a networked display technology, has changed its name to DisplayLink. The renamed company is headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, with the main R&D and product development activities in Cambridge, England.

DisplayLink Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif.) is offering the chance to have two displays on one computer by using existing PC interfaces such as USB, Ethernet and wireless networks to transfer fully-interactive, high-resolution graphics to any computer or HDTV display.

The technology is interactive and supports up to 32-bit, true-color graphics resolution at 1920 x 1200 over standard wired and wireless network interfaces that exist on all desktop and notebook computers. DisplayLinks current product supports USB 2.0 and the company plans to expand on its USB product line with Ethernet and wireless solutions in the coming months.

"We are changing our name to DisplayLink because it is a simple and direct way to reinforce our brand message by reminding consumers of the benefits of our technology," said Hamid Farzaneh, president and chief executive officer of DisplayLink, in a statement.

DisplayLink is funded by Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital and Esprit Capital and to date has raised over $22 million for technology, product and market development.
